On Wetlands International

Wetlands International (WI) is a global, not-for-profit NGO dedicated through research, information exchange and international conservation initiatives to the protection of wetlands and their invaluable resources and biodiversity for future generations. One of the founding organisations of WI was the International Waterfowl and Wetlands Research Bureau, which played a fundamental role in establishing the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.

With its headquarters based in Wageningen, the Netherlands, WI is governed by a membership composed of governments, NGOs and specialists. As the world leader in wetland conservation, it is currently involved with projects in approximately 120 countries. Partnership action is at the heart of its operations, which involve international conservation organisations, governments, development agencies, and individuals. Furthermore, together with IUCN and 3 other organisations, WI is an International Organisation Partner to the Ramsar Convention, providing administrative and scientific support.
