| On Sunday, December 9, 2007 a workshop was held exploring ways for achieving the wise use of the Ramsar wetland Sakata (Niigata prefecture). The freshwater lake Sakata has a colourful history of wise use which began when it was used to irrigate surrounding rice paddy fields. To maintain its waters, locals also banded together to dredge the lake bottom, an event known as katabushin. The nutrient-rich sludge was then used to fertilise fields, a prime example of recycle-based agriculture. Sakata has since been converted into a park but now faces a decline in water quality. |
Following an introduction to the Ramsar Convention and the wise use of wetlands, participants broke off into three groups to exchange opinions. A flurry of ideas ensued- to the point that posters provided for brainstorming were completely filled, thus reflecting the awareness raised during the event.
Although opinions varied, participants unanimously agreed that young and old should build on Sakata’s illustrious past of wise use, in a manner that all will benefit from its ecosystem services now, and into the future.
