The Ramsar site Yatsu-higata is one of the last remaining tidal flats in urban Japan. However, in recent years the tidal flat has been overgrown with a green tide of Ulva pertusa sea lettuce, of which continual accumulation and decomposition degrades animal habitats and their surrounding areas.
Commissioned by the Ministry of the Environment, WIJ has established a Study Panel for the Control of Ulva pertusa in Yatsu-higata, which conducts surveys and discussions for solutions on the matter.
